Chad and Sean’s New Baby

Today, on Mothers’ Day, I woke up early, and went out to the Valley Fair parking lot and hung out there from 10am-4pm.  Valley Fair is an amusement park (owned by the same company that owns Cedar Point); I wasn’t just hanging out there to be a creep, but my buddies Chad and Sean were participating in an AutoCross event.    The group basically rents out parking lots, and set up a course where people can come and run time trials.  In any case, I came out to take some pics at the event (get busy learnin’, or get busy sleeping, as I always say).

Julia’s Grad Photos

My friend, Julia, asked me to take some photos of her in her graduation gown (she’s getting her masters in reverse psychology… or, is she?).  Got out of work, and got home in time to receive a package from the FedEx guy.  It was a lens I bought used from a guy on the Fred Miranda forums.  The lens is a 30-100mm f/2.0 lens.  It’s my first super high grade Olympus lens, and I’m blown away at how huge this thing is!  It’s bigger than my 50-200mm f/2.8, but I suppose that shouldn’t be a surprise.  In any case, I was able to use it to take some great portraits today.  We started off outside, on the University of Minnesota campus.  It turned out to be an overcast evening, which worked out okay, as it provided some diffuse light, which means, no overexposed highlights, and harsh shadows to have to deal with.

In any case, here are a few photos I took today…

Still have more to go through, but I definitely learned more again today (a lot about light placement, and body positioning).  I’ll have to revisit this entry and insert my lessons learned, once I go through the rest of my photos…

That’s all for now.

Lessons Learned: I need to expose and light for eyes. I might try the brenizer method next time. I should try some hair lighting. And make sure I’m shooting from above so the subject keeps her chin up…

A Moment in Time…

Chad, Trad Climbing over the St. Croix River | Olympus E620 & 50-200mm @ 50mm, f/3.2, 1/800 sec, ISO 100

You can also see it on NYTimes website here: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/05/03/blogs/a-moment-in-time.html#/4bde4810b93af13e49000045

I submitted my photo to the “A Moment in Time” project that I saw on the New York Times website. Basically, long story short, they wanted people from around the world to take a snapshot at the same time, and upload it, and in this case, it was 10am cdt, 05/02/2010. Luckily for me, I was already up and out to go rock climbing with some friends at Taylors Falls. I snapped this one at 10am exactly (according to the timestamp on the photo).

Also, thanks to Sandy (at sandyalamode.com) who reminded me about this project. 🙂
